The EuP Directive will drive major changes in the future design and environmental impact of electrical products throughout Europe. Minimum eco-design requirements will be introduced from early 2009 on a product by product basis based on a thorough assessment of the impact of each product across its whole life.
Manufacturers and importers of electrical products will need to demonstrate that their products comply with the EuP requirements – with evidence provided by the CE mark for their products. To get the CE mark, manufacturers will need to demonstrate that their product meets the eco-design criteria and also that designers have followed a design process to keep the whole life environmental impacts of their products as low as practical. Without the CE mark a product can not be placed on the European market.
If you are a designer, manufacturer, importer or retailer of EuPs on the European market, then you need to make sure that the EuP Directive is well understood in your company. The Directive has been in negotiation for many years. Now it’s come into force make sure that designers, marketing, supply chain and senior executives are well aware of potential requirements.
Electronic products have a long design cycle, so while the regulations don’t come in until 2009, it’s important for manufacturers to start assessment today. WSP’s EcoFly assessment tool is the first comprehensive life cycle design tool specifically developed for electronics designers to help track and demonstrate compliance for their products through the design process.
